America's Next Top Model
America's Next Top Model, often abbreviated as ANTM and Top Model within the show, is a U.S. reality show and origin of the Next Top Model idea, in which women compete against each other for the title of America's Next Top Model and a jumpstart in the modeling industry.
The show was created by former supermodel Tyra Banks. Banks serves as the head judge on the panel and as an executive producer alongside Ken Mok and Anthony Dominici. The seasons of the series are officially referred to as "Cycles". The first Cycle premiered on May 20, 2003, on the U.S. television network UPN and quickly became one of the network's most-watched shows. Since its seventh season, the show has aired on The CW, where it has also achieved top ratings. The first theme music was sung by Tyra Banks and produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins. The 17th season was also called the "All-Star Edition" because all of the contestants had competed in past seasons and were given a second chance. The 18th season was subtitled "British Invasion", as it featured seven American girls as well as seven British girls who had competed on different seasons of Britain's Next Top Model and were given the chance to be a top model. The 19th season started with the subtitle "College Edition" on August 24, 2012. The 20th season is subtitled "Guys & Girls", here both women and men compete for the first time. The season began on August 2, 2013.
For the German television broadcast, the original sound was overlaid with a voice-over. The first season started on 9 January 2007 on the German music channel VIVA and was broadcast until 27 February on Tuesdays at 9 pm. The second season began on January 7, 2008, in the new Monday slot. On July 7, 2008, season three continued to air on Mondays at 9 pm on VIVA. Season four began on October 27, 2008 and aired on Mondays at 10pm to 11pm on VIVA. For the airing of season five, which started on July 13, 2009, a voice-over was not used and a version with subtitles was adopted instead. The sixth season, on the other hand, again used a voice-over for the broadcast, which began on VIVA on April 12, 2010. The network continued to show the seventh season on Monday nights from October 11, 2010. With the restructuring of VIVA's programming - beginning January 1, 2011 - the time slot changed to Fridays at 10:15 pm. The eighth season ran from January 14, 2011 in German premiere.
On October 14, 2015, Tyra Banks announced through Twitter that the 22nd season would be the last. The final episode aired on December 4, 2015. However, VH1 secured the rights for a reboot shortly after. The 23rd season went on the air with some changes to the format and completely new judges on December 12, 2016. Banks, who continued to be involved as a producer for the 23rd season, decided to take over hosting duties again while preparing for the 24th season. In 2018, the format was canceled after 24 seasons and over 300 episodes.
Critique
The fashion magazine Allure already criticized in October 2006 that the show had not yet produced a supermodel.
Ken Mok and Tyra Banks noted the heavy smoking in season eight. Mok said he was aware of the show's influence on young viewers. In the next, ninth cycle, the contestants were banned from smoking and the photo shoots dealt more with health and environmental issues.
After the tenth season ended, the show's producers received a lawsuit from Michael Marvisi, the owner of this season's modeling house. The contestants and production crew allegedly left behind damage of about $500,000. In addition to leftover food, holes were reportedly found in the walls; $90,000 worth of water and electronic damage was also caused. The production team had damaged the ceilings of the rooms in order to install spotlights and cameras.
The 19-year-old winner of the Relay 15 in 2010, Ann Ward, is only 45 kg at a height of 1.88 metres. This corresponds to a body mass index (BMI) of 12.7. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification, a BMI below 16 is classified as severe underweight. This level is considered to be very concerning from a health perspective, and in photos Ann Ward appears anorexic. In some episodes, Ward was seen preparing very greasy dishes, such as deep-fried Oreo cookies. Despite continued fierce protests in the run-up, Ann was declared the winner.
