Subalpine zone

The subalpine zone is the high-elevation belt below the treeline characterized by cold-adapted trees, krummholz, meadows and shrubs; it varies worldwide in species, structure, and ecological role.

The subalpine zone is the band of vegetation that lies immediately below the mountaintop treeline and above lower montane forests. It is defined more by climate—short growing seasons, cold temperatures, strong winds and deep seasonal snowpack—than by strict elevation. This tendency toward lateral or horizontal growth favors layering: branches that contact the ground develop additional rooting and form new stems, a process aided when branches touch soil and are insulated by snow. Seasonal snow cover can shield low vegetation from the worst exposure of winter, but exposed branches above the snowline are frequently damaged or killed by ice and wind.

The subalpine zone is important for hydrology and biodiversity. Snow accumulation and delayed melt help regulate downstream water supplies, while the diverse mix of trees, meadows and shrubs supports specialized wildlife and plant communities.
