CONCACAF Gold Cup
This article describes the men's CONCACAF Gold Cup. For the women's football competition, see CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup.
The CONCACAF Gold Cup (Spanish: Copa de Oro de la CONCACAF), also known as the Gold Cup for short, is a continental tournament for national football teams held since 1963 to determine the football champions of North, Central America and the Caribbean. The competition is organised by CONCACAF.
After CONCACAF was founded (1961), the CONCACAF Nations Cup (Spanish: Copa de Naciones de la CONCACAF) initially replaced the predecessor tournaments of North America (NAFC Championship) and Central America and the Caribbean (CCCF Championship). This was held every two years from 1963 and every four years from 1973, when it was given World Cup qualifying tournament status. In 1991, it was renamed the CONCACAF Gold Cup and has been held every two years since then. It has since lost its role as a World Cup qualifier.
The competition regularly involves national football teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. South American teams also participated by invitation from 1996 to 2005. The CONCACAF Gold Cup 2000 and 2002 also saw South Korea, one of the hosts of the 2002 World Cup, as the first Asian country, and South Africa, host of the 2010 World Cup, as the first African country, invited in 2005. No visiting team has won the tournament so far, but Brazil reached the final twice and Colombia once. No visiting teams have been invited since 2007.
In February 2018, CONCACAF announced plans to increase the field of participants from 12 to 16 teams from the 2019 Gold Cup onwards. The newly created CONCACAF Nations League will also serve as a qualifying tournament.
