French Guiana national football team

Regional football team representing the French overseas department of French Guiana; CONCACAF and Caribbean Football Union member but not a FIFA member, competing in regional tournaments.

Overview

The French Guiana national football team represents the French overseas department of French Guiana in international association football. Because French Guiana is an integral part of France rather than an independent country, its team is not a member of FIFA and therefore cannot enter FIFA World Cup qualifying. It is, however, a member of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) and of CONCACAF, allowing the team to take part in regional competitions.

Characteristics and organisation

Governed locally by the regional football association, the squad is typically composed of players based in the territory and some professionals who play in mainland France. Team selection, coaching and development reflect a mix of local infrastructure and ties to the French football system. The team wears colors linked to regional identity and trains at local facilities on the coast and in the capital.

Competitions and status

French Guiana competes in Caribbean and CONCACAF events such as Caribbean Cup qualification, CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup qualifying pathways when eligible. Because it is not a FIFA member, matches may be treated differently for player eligibility and cap-tie rules, and the team cannot progress to FIFA tournaments.

History and development

The team has a history rooted in local clubs and community football, gradually moving into more formal regional play as CONCACAF expanded opportunities for non-sovereign territories. Investment in youth and coaching programs aims to raise competitive standards and give local players exposure to higher-level competition.

Notable points

  • Not a FIFA member — cannot enter World Cup qualifiers.
  • Member of CONCACAF and the Caribbean Football Union.
  • Shares characteristics with other French overseas teams such as Guadeloupe and Martinique regarding eligibility and player pools.

Local supporters view the team as an important symbol of regional pride and a pathway for players to progress within the wider French and Caribbean football worlds.
