The Atacama Desert lies along the Pacific coast of South America on the Tropic of Capricorn in northern Chile. Climate and causes of aridity

The Atacama's extreme dryness is the result of several interacting factors. Cold ocean currents along the coast—fed by waters that ultimately move north from the Southern Ocean and Antarctic region—stabilize the overlying air and limit the ability of moisture to rise and condense, producing coastal fog rather than frequent rain (cold coastal influence). Persistent subtropical high-pressure systems suppress convection. Local topography also influences precipitation patterns: the coastal ranges and the Andes create complex rain shadows and channel moisture unevenly inland (mountains) (rain shadow). The combination of these factors leaves much of the terrain extremely arid, even though temperatures vary with altitude and proximity to the ocean.

Landforms, water, and soils

The Atacama contains a patchwork of distinctive landforms: saline basins and salt flats such as the Salar de Atacama, broad alluvial fans, rocky plains, and high plateaus. Few rivers cross the desert; only a handful originating in the Andes manage to reach the sea. Most streams dissipate into the porous ground or terminate in inland basins rather than flowing to the ocean (coastal discharge). Where fog reaches the coastal slopes it sustains narrow bands of vegetation and has supported human settlements for centuries.

People, history, and economic uses

Humans have lived in the Atacama region since prehistoric times and left important archaeological remains. The coastal Chinchorro culture produced some of the oldest known artificially mummified remains in the world (Chinchorro mummies). In historical times the desert became economically important for its mineral deposits—especially nitrates and later large copper deposits. In the late 19th century control of nitrate-rich areas was a central factor in the War of the Pacific; commercial nitrate (often called sodium nitrate) mining shaped regional development (nitrate). Modern Chilean communities in the Atacama also use ingenious water-harvesting techniques: fog catchers—sheets or mesh that condense coastal fog—collect water for small-scale agriculture and domestic use (fog collection) by intercepting the frequent coastal mist or camanchaca.

Ecology, science, and tourism

Although plant and animal life is sparse compared with wetter regions, specialized communities survive in oases, wetlands and fog-fed slopes. Microbial mats, lichens, and salt-tolerant plants occupy niches on rock and in brine pools. The clarity and stability of Atacama skies and high, dry plateaus have made the region a premier site for astronomical observatories and atmospheric research; international facilities take advantage of low humidity and minimal light pollution. The desert is also a focus for astrobiology because its surface soils and salts provide analogues for Martian conditions.
