Thorax (body region)
The thorax is the mid-body region in many animals. In vertebrates it forms the chest enclosing heart and lungs; in arthropods it is the middle tagma bearing legs and wings.

In mammals and other vertebrates the thorax — often called the chest — is bounded dorsally by the thoracic vertebrae, ventrally by the sternum, and laterally by the ribs. The lower limit is the diaphragm, a muscular partition that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity. The vertebral column segment in this region is represented by the thoracic vertebrae.

In crustaceans the thoracic segments may be fused with the head to form a cephalothorax in some groups.
