Overview
Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) was a very large, slow-moving marine mammal in the order Sirenia (the sirenians), the group that includes modern dugongs and manatees. Known from accounts and a few collected specimens after its formal discovery in 1741, it inhabited cold, shallow waters of the north Pacific and fed primarily on kelp and other seaweeds.

The species was exceptionally large for a sirenian. Contemporary descriptions and later research indicate a massive, elongated body with thick blubber, paddle-like forelimbs, a horizontally flattened tail, and reduced dentition adapted to herbivory. Estimates place adult weight in the range of several tonnes, and individuals were many meters long. Steller's sea cow lacked the agility of smaller sirenians and relied on a buoyant, slow-swimming lifestyle.

Historical records indicate that commercial and subsistence hunting rapidly reduced local populations; by about 1768 — roughly 27 years after discovery — the species had disappeared from the wild. Contemporary observers noted the animals were easy to approach and slow, factors that contributed to their rapid exploitation.
Causes, impacts and significance
Overhunting was the immediate cause of extinction, but other factors likely worsened the decline. The species' restricted range, slow life history, and dependence on kelp made it sensitive to ecological shifts: reductions in kelp availability, possibly from climatic variation or changes in sea urchin populations, would have reduced food resources. The loss of this large kelp grazer altered coastal ecosystems and stands as an early example of human-driven marine extirpation. Modern conservationists cite the case as a warning about rapid exploitation of newly contacted species.
