Sirenia (order of aquatic mammals)

Characteristics

Sirenian anatomy reflects a fully aquatic lifestyle: forelimbs are modified into flippers, hind limbs are absent, and the tail is flattened into a broad, horizontal fluke or paddle used for propulsion. They have dense bones that help control buoyancy, sparse body hair, and large, downward-facing mouths adapted to grazing. Reproductive rates are low; females typically bear a single calf after a lengthy gestation and provide long parental care.

Taxonomy and species

• The dugong (family Dugongidae): the extant dugong inhabits coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific and is adapted to grazing seagrass beds. See dugong.

Fossil evidence shows sirenians evolved from terrestrial mammals during the early Cenozoic and are part of the Afrotheria clade, which also includes elephants and hyraxes.

Ecology, threats and importance

Sirenian herbivory influences seagrass and freshwater plant communities and thus supports coastal ecosystem health. They face threats from habitat degradation, boat collisions, entanglement, and environmental pollution. Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection, boat-speed regulations, rescue and rehabilitation, and scientific monitoring. Their slow reproduction and specialized diets make population recovery challenging.

Notable facts: sirenians inspired maritime folklore about mermaids and have a long history of human interaction through subsistence hunting and cultural significance in many coastal societies.
