Although Nordström's name is less widely known than Einstein's, historians of physics recognize his role in the early development of relativistic gravitation theory and in attempts at unification. In some Finnish writings he has been called the "Finnish Einstein," a label that reflects national pride more than a direct scientific equivalence. His scalar theories are still discussed as instructive alternatives that clarify why the tensor character of Einstein's general relativity was essential to match observations.

Death and historical circumstances

Nordström died in Helsinki in 1923. Contemporary accounts associate his death with exposure to ionizing radiation, at a time when radioactivity had attracted interest both for research and for proposed therapeutic uses. Medical knowledge and safety practices concerning radiation were limited in the early twentieth century; this historical context helps explain why several scientists and physicians were later found to have suffered adverse effects from occupational or therapeutic exposure.
