Overview
A time zone is a region of the Earth that observes the same standard clock time for civil purposes. The phrase "local time of day" describes the convention of having a single agreed hour within that region, which simplifies scheduling, transport and communication. In theory the world is divided into about 24 principal zones based on longitude, but in practice political borders, economic ties and historical decisions create many more named zones and local variations.
How time zones work
Modern timekeeping uses a global reference called Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Each zone is defined by an offset from UTC expressed in hours and minutes (for example UTC+1 or UTC−5:30). Most offsets are whole hours, but several jurisdictions use half-hour or 45-minute differences. Greenwich Mean Time became an important reference after the construction of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich in 1675 and the eventual international adoption of Greenwich as a prime meridian. The growth of railways and telegraphic communication in the 19th century created practical pressure to abandon dozens of local solar times in favor of coordinated zones. During the 20th century UTC gradually superseded GMT as the scientific standard while many traditional names and abbreviations remained in everyday use.

Time zones are essential for legal time, transportation timetables, computing timestamps and international business. Many countries also apply Daylight Saving Time (DST) during part of the year by advancing clocks by one hour; DST rules vary by country and change periodically. Software systems typically rely on the IANA time zone database to map regions to their historical and current offsets and DST rules.

- Large political regions use named zones, for example the North American Eastern zone which includes cities such as New York City and Miami.

- Not all boundaries follow meridians: political borders, islands and administrative convenience often create irregular zone shapes and small enclaves where time differs from nearby areas.
- The poles present a special case: there is no natural longitudinal basis at the poles, so research stations and temporary camps adopt a practical time such as North Pole expeditionary UTC-based times or the time of their supply base; the South Pole station traditionally uses the time zone of its logistic support.
Because time zones blend astronomical, political and administrative considerations, they remain a patchwork that must be consulted and updated for precise scheduling. When crossing regions, travelers and systems convert local clocks to a common reference (UTC) to avoid ambiguity and maintain coordinated activities worldwide.
