Overview
Tirana County (Albanian: Qarku Tiranë) is one of the twelve first-level administrative regions of Albania. It contains the national capital, Tirana, and surrounding districts. The county functions as the political, economic and cultural centre of the country and is the most populous of Albania's counties, with roughly 800,000 inhabitants concentrated in urban and suburban areas.
Geography and natural features
Tirana County spans a varied landscape that includes lowland plains, a short Adriatic coastal strip, and mountainous terrain to the east. Two rivers flow through the wider county area: the Ishëm and the smaller Tiranë River, both contributing to local drainage patterns and agricultural irrigation. To the east of Tirana city lies Dajti National Park, a protected area on the slopes of Mount Dajti about 26 km from the capital that provides recreational space and biodiversity close to the urban centre.
Administrative divisions and population
Historically organized into districts, the county includes the districts of Kavajë and Tirana alongside numerous municipalities and settlements. The urban agglomeration around the city of Tirana dominates demography and services, while smaller coastal and inland towns retain agricultural and fishing traditions. Population density is highest in the municipal and suburban belt surrounding the capital.
Economy and infrastructure
The county is Albania's economic heart: government institutions, businesses, universities and cultural organizations are centred in Tirana. Major infrastructure serving the region includes the main international airport in the greater Tirana area, road connections to other regions and to nearby ports, and rail links for freight and passengers. Economic activity ranges from public administration and services to trade, light industry and tourism.
Culture, tourism and attractions
Tirana County hosts many of the nation’s museums, theatres and historical neighbourhoods, making it a focal point for cultural life. Outdoor attractions such as Dajti National Park and the mountain cable car give residents and visitors easy access to natural scenery. Coastal areas near Kavajë offer beaches and seaside towns popular in summer.
