Overview
Badjcinus (literally "expert hunter dog") is an extinct genus of small carnivorous marsupial placed in the family Thylacinidae. It lived in the early Oligocene, around 33–32 million years ago, and is regarded as one of the more primitive or basal members of the thylacinid lineage rather than a close relative of the later large thylacine. The genus helps illustrate early experimentation in body size and diet among Australian marsupial predators related to the broader group sometimes referred to as thylacinids.

Fossils of Badjcinus were recovered from the well studied Riversleigh deposits in north‑west Queensland. Riversleigh is one of the richest fossil localities for Australian Oligocene and Miocene faunas and has yielded many small and large mammal remains that illuminate marsupial evolution across changing climates. The age of the deposits places Badjcinus in the early Oligocene, a time of significant environmental transition in Australia. Anatomical features of the skull and dentition support its placement within Thylacinidae, though it retains several primitive traits compared with later species.
Anatomy and diet
Badjcinus was relatively small for a carnivorous marsupial, with an estimated body mass near 2.4 kg (about 5.2 lb).
