Antares — the red supergiant at the heart of Scorpius
Antares (Alpha Scorpii) is a prominent red supergiant in the constellation Scorpius, one of the brightest stars in the night sky and a nearby example of a massive star nearing the end of its life.
Overview
Antares, formally designated Alpha Scorpii, is a bright red supergiant red supergiant star located in the southern constellation Scorpius. Visible to the naked eye as a reddish point, it ranks among the top twenty brightest stars in the night sky and is often listed as the fifteenth or sixteenth brightest depending on counting conventions involving nearby systems such as Capella. Antares lies within the disk of the Milky Way galaxy and is a defining object of its constellation.

Antares is a massive evolved star with a large, cool photosphere and spectral characteristics typical of an M-type supergiant. Estimates place its mass at roughly 15–18 times that of the Sun, while its radius is hundreds of times greater than the Sun's. If placed at the center of our Solar System its visible surface would extend out into the region of the inner asteroid belt, lying between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, and therefore comparable in size to the space occupied by the asteroid belt. Antares emits a large portion of its energy at longer wavelengths, so although its visual brightness is about ten thousand times that of the Sun, its total or bolometric luminosity is substantially larger when infrared output is included; much of this infrared emission is produced by the cool outer layers and surrounding dust.
Environment, companions, and association
Antares belongs to the nearby Scorpius–Centaurus stellar association, a loose grouping of young, massive stars with a characteristic mean age measured in millions of years. It has at least one well-documented nearby companion, commonly called Antares B; however, the wide orbit and long orbital period (measured in centuries to a few millennia) make precise orbital parameters difficult to determine. The red supergiant is also embedded in or projected against diffuse nebular material sometimes described in historical accounts as a yellow nebula or surrounding haze created by stellar winds and interstellar dust.
Observation, imaging, and notable facts
Antares has been studied across the electromagnetic spectrum. It was among the first red supergiants to be resolved by interferometry and modern telescopes, allowing direct imaging of its extended atmosphere and circumstellar material. Observations in the near-infrared and radio reveal complex outflows and asymmetries. Because of its brightness and color it has long been a reference object for observers and is sometimes compared visually and physically with other bright evolved stars such as Arcturus. Occasional small- to moderate-amplitude variability is recorded, typical for luminous cool supergiants.
Evolutionary status and importance
As a massive star in a late evolutionary stage, Antares is fusing heavy elements in shells around an inert core and is expected to end its life in a core-collapse supernova at some future time. Its proximity and size make it an important laboratory for studying mass loss, stellar atmospheres, and pre-supernova evolution in massive stars. The extended envelope and circumstellar material around Antares provide observable signatures useful for testing models of how massive stars shed mass before explosion.
