Aoede (Jupiter XLI) is a small, retrograde irregular moon of Jupiter discovered in 2003. It is about 4 km wide, orbits at ~23 million km with a highly eccentric, retrograde path, and is associated with the Pasiphaë group.

Aoede is a very small, non-spherical body with an estimated diameter of roughly 4 km. It follows a distant, eccentric, and retrograde orbit around Jupiter. Its mean orbital radius is about 23,044,000 km and it completes one orbit in approximately 714.657 days. The orbit is inclined roughly 160° to the ecliptic (about 162° relative to Jupiter's equator) and has a high eccentricity (~0.6012), giving it a noticeably elongated path ecliptic. These properties make Aoede typical of Jupiter's irregular satellites: distant, small, and dynamically excited.
Name and mythological background
In March 2005 the satellite received the name Aoede, after Aœde (Aoide), one of the earliest Muses in Greek tradition and a mythological figure associated with song and poetic voice. In the myths she appears as a daughter of Zeus (the Greek counterpart to Jupiter) and the Titaness Mnemosyne. The International Astronomical Union's naming practice for Jovian moons preserves this mythological connection in the official designation Muse, Zeus, Mnemosyne.
Group membership and relationship to other moons
Aoede is generally considered part of the Pasiphaë group, a collection of retrograde, irregular satellites that orbit far from Jupiter. Members of this group share similar semi-major axes and retrograde motion and are thought to be fragments of an earlier captured body. The Pasiphaë association is characterized by satellites orbiting at distances roughly between 22.8 and 24.1 million km and inclinations in a broad retrograde band; Aoede fits this overall pattern despite some scatter in orbital inclination and other parameters Pasiphaë group.
