Overview

The Amazon Basin is the vast lowland region of tropical South America drained by the Amazon River and its many tributaries. The basin defines the catchment area for the world's largest river system by discharge and supports the largest contiguous tropical forest on Earth. Geography and hydrology

The main stem of the system, the Amazon River, begins in high Andean headwaters and flows across a wide, generally low-lying plain to the Atlantic Ocean, with elevations often close to sea level. Its headwaters originate in the Andes mountains, especially in regions of Peru and Ecuador. The total drainage basin spans multiple countries; more than half of the basin area lies within Brazil, while major tributaries also drain parts of Colombia, Venezuela and Bolivia. These tributaries contribute enormous seasonal flows and shape floodplain dynamics (see tributary systems).

Biodiversity and human presence

The Amazon rainforest within the basin comprises vast tracts of dense tropical forest and associated wetlands. It hosts exceptional biodiversity: thousands of tree species, innumerable plant, insect and vertebrate species, and many endemic organisms. Indigenous peoples and long-established riverine communities have shaped and depended on these landscapes for millennia.

Formation and history

The basin's present shape is the product of tectonic uplift, erosion and climatic change over millions of years. Uplift of the Andes redirected drainage patterns west-to-east and created the conditions for the modern Amazon River system and its extensive floodplains.

Importance, threats and conservation

The Amazon Basin is one of the planet's most important ecosystems, providing carbon storage, climate regulation, freshwater resources and cultural values. It faces pressures from deforestation, agriculture, mining, dam construction and climate change. Conservation efforts include protected areas, indigenous land rights, sustainable management and international research and policy collaboration.
