The gramophone record, commonly called a record or vinyl record when made from polyvinyl chloride, is an analog audio storage medium in the form of a flat, rotating disc. Physical design and how it works

A typical record is a circular disc manufactured from a hard material such as shellac in early 20th-century pressings or modern plastics including polymer compounds. The recorded information appears as a very fine groove that runs in a spiral from the outer edge toward the center. During playback, a stylus or needle mounted on a tonearm traces the groove and vibrates in response to its modulations; those vibrations are converted into electrical signals and finally into sound by an amplifier and loudspeakers. Many technical aspects of records influence the sound: groove width and depth, the cutting stylus, pressing quality and the condition of the playback stylus (stylus/needle).

Common formats and parts

Records have been produced in different sizes and speeds to suit various needs. Standard distinctions include diameter, rotational speed and intended content. Common sizes and formats are:

  • 7-inch singles — often played at 45 rpm and typically carrying one or two short recordings (singles).
  • 10-inch and 12-inch discs — with 12-inch discs played at 33 1/3 rpm commonly used for long-playing albums (albums).
  • EPs (extended play) — intermediate length, usually more tracks than a single but fewer than an LP.

Historical development

The concept of mechanically recording and replaying sound dates to the 19th century. Thomas Edison demonstrated a phonograph in 1877 that recorded onto tinfoil and later onto wax cylinders; these removable cylinders were an early commercial format. Discs were developed soon after — by inventors and entrepreneurs including Emile Berliner in the late 1880s — and gradually overtook cylinders in market share during the early 20th century. Early discs were often made from a brittle shellac mixture; after mid-century plastics such as polyvinyl chloride ("vinyl") and improvements in manufacturing led to a more durable, quieter format. The introduction of the long-playing microgroove LP by Columbia Records in 1948 and the 45 rpm single by RCA Victor altered listening habits and the economics of recorded music.

Sound, mastering and subjective qualities

Because records are an analog medium, the signal path from groove to loudspeaker is continuous rather than digital. Many listeners describe vinyl sound as "warmer" or more musically pleasing; engineers note that that impression arises from a combination of frequency response, harmonic distortion characteristics, and the mastering choices made when cutting a lacquer master. Records also introduce surface noise (crackle and hiss) and are subject to wear that alters sound over time. Compact discs and later digital formats offer lower noise and higher objective accuracy, but some prefer the sonic character and tactile experience of records.

Uses, cultural role and revival

Beyond home listening, records have been central to other practices: radio distribution, DJing and remix culture, sound archival work and collectible merchandising. Vinyl sleeves and inserts provided a canvas for album art and liner notes, amplifying music's visual and cultural impact. Although vinyl's market share declined sharply with the rise of digital media, the format never completely disappeared; a resurgence since the early 21st century has been driven by collectors, independent labels and renewed consumer interest in physical media. New pressings, reissues and boutique mastering services coexist with vintage collecting and specialized pressing plants.

Care, preservation and practical considerations

Proper handling, storage and playback setup markedly extend a record's useful life. Recommended practices include storing discs vertically in a cool, dry place, keeping records in inner sleeves to reduce dust, cleaning with appropriate brushes or fluid before playback and ensuring cartridge alignment and tracking force are correct. Records are vulnerable to scratches, warping from heat, and irreversible wear if played with a damaged stylus. Archivists use high-quality transfers to digital formats to preserve content from aging or fragile pressings.
