Overview

Whitewash, also called calcimine or lime paint, is a traditional mineral-based coating used to make surfaces white and to protect masonry and timber. It is distinct from modern oil or latex paints because it cures by carbonation rather than film formation. Whitewash is inexpensive, breathable, and has been applied to walls, fences, barns and interiors for centuries. In technical terms it can be described as a type of paint with a primarily lime-based chemistry.

Composition and chemistry

The basic formula combines slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) and chalk, a form of carbonaceous filler commonly described as chalk or calcium carbonate. When the prepared slurry is spread over a porous surface the calcium hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to form a thin mineral crust of calcium carbonate. This carbonation creates the characteristic matt white finish and makes the coating permeable to water vapour rather than forming an impermeable film. Some recipes add sodium silicate (often called water glass) to increase adhesion and hardening.

Additives and colourants

Many historical and modern recipes include additives to change texture, adhesion, durability or colour. Common examples include:

  • Binders and adhesives: glue, egg white, milk.
  • Modifiers and stabilisers: water glass (sodium silicate), salt, Portland cement.
  • Fillers and thickeners: flour, soil or other fine earths.
  • Colourants: small amounts of pigments or traditional agents such as bluing to offset yellowing (laundry bluing) or organic dyes and pigments to produce tinted washes.

Application and uses

Whitewash is normally applied in thin coats with a brush, broom or low-pressure sprayer to porous substrates: lime plaster, brick, stone and some timbers. Because the finish is mineral-based and breathable it is often chosen for older buildings where moisture movement through walls must be preserved. Typical uses include agricultural buildings, boundary walls, interior ceilings in vernacular housing, and public sanitation or cosmetic treatments where a bright, reflective, hygienic surface is desired.

History and cultural role

Whitewashing is economical and has a long worldwide history. Before widespread manufacture of pigmented paints, whitewash provided an inexpensive, readily available way to refresh and sanitise buildings. In many cultures periodic whitewashing became part of routine maintenance, public health efforts, or seasonal practices; documented customs range from village clean-ups to regulations requiring streets and façades to be refreshed.

Advantages, limitations and maintenance

Advantages include low material cost, anti-microbial alkalinity, UV reflectivity and vapour permeability that helps prevent trapped moisture. Limitations are shorter wear life than modern painted finishes, sensitivity to heavy rainfall unless stabilised, and a limited ability to achieve durable, saturated colours without pigments and stronger binders. Repairs and redecoration are simple: dirty or damaged areas are cleaned and new coats are brushed on. For conservation of historic fabric, traditional limewash recipes are often preferred because they are compatible with breathable masonry.
