Leaves are typically needle-like and adapted to reduce water loss; in most genera they are persistent (evergreen), but some, notably the larches, are deciduous. Reproduction is by cones: separate male pollen cones and larger female seed cones produce wind-dispersed pollen and winged seeds. Wood is predominantly softwood with resin canals and a straight, columnar growth habit in many species. Physiological adaptations—such as thick cuticles and sunken stomata—help many members tolerate cold, dry and nutrient-poor sites.

Pinaceae are native primarily to the Northern Hemisphere and form dominant forest types in boreal, montane and some coastal regions. They are the largest living conifer family by species count and have a broad, though mainly temperate, range. Centres of species diversity occur in mountain regions such as southwest China, Mexico, central Japan and California. Almost all species remain north of the equator, with only one known to cross near the equator in Southeast Asia.
