Pilot whales (genus Globicephala) are two large oceanic dolphins—long‑finned and short‑finned—known for deep diving, tight social bonds, occasional mass strandings, and varied global distributions.

Overview — Pilot whales belong to the marine mammal genus Globicephala, members of the oceanic dolphin family. Two commonly recognized species are the long‑finned pilot whale and the short‑finned pilot whale. They are large, dark‑coloured cetaceans often grouped with other large dolphins and collectively referred to as "blackfish." Physical characteristics and species differences

Pilot whales have robust bodies, rounded heads without a pronounced beak, and relatively short dorsal fins. The two species are similar at sea and can be difficult to tell apart without close observation: the long‑finned pilot whale tends to have proportionally longer pectoral flippers and is generally found in cooler waters, while the short‑finned pilot whale is more common in temperate and tropical regions. Observers note their dark slate to black coloration and occasional pale patches around the throat or behind the dorsal fin. Distribution and habitat

Pilot whales have a nearly worldwide distribution, but populations are regionally distinct. Pilot whales are highly social and typically occur in stable groups called pods. Social bonds are strong: juveniles often remain with natal groups, and females form long‑lasting associations that shape group cohesion. Scientific work indicates unusual life patterns in some populations, including long post‑reproductive lifespans for females. Foraging trips and dive patterns have been studied with tags and visual observations, revealing coordinated group hunting and complex social foraging behaviour.

Strandings, threats and conservation

Pilot whales are notable for relatively frequent mass strandings, where multiple animals beach together. The precise causes are not fully understood; hypotheses include navigational errors, strong social bonds that keep groups together, illness, environmental factors and anthropogenic disturbances such as naval sonar or shipping noise. Threats to pilot whales vary geographically and include bycatch in fisheries, targeted hunts in some regions, pollution and habitat change. Conservation status and management measures differ by species and area; regional monitoring, research into causes of strandings and mitigation of human impacts are active priorities for scientists and conservationists.

Human interactions and research importance — Pilot whales attract interest for their complex social systems, long lifespans and sensitivity to ocean changes. They appear in cultural practices and local economies where hunting or ecotourism occurs.
