Policy, cost, and local water availability shape which techniques are practical in any region.

Distinctions worth noting include the difference between supplemental irrigation (adding water to rainfed crops) and full irrigation (providing all crop water needs), and between surface and pressurized methods in terms of water use efficiency. Ongoing improvements aim to increase productivity while reducing environmental impact through technology, better management and adapted crop choices.
