Career and businesses

Ty launched what became Metrobank in the early 1960s and guided it into one of the Philippines' largest private banks. He was widely recognized as a Filipino banker and a business magnate who organized his holdings under corporate vehicles that later evolved into diversified interests. Over decades his group assembled investments across multiple sectors and established a visible corporate presence in both domestic and regional markets.

Major areas of activity included:

  • Commercial and retail banking and related financial services
  • Real estate development and property management
  • Automotive distribution and dealerships
  • Insurance, power and other industrial investments

Ty was born in Hong Kong on 18 October 1932 and later built his career in the Philippines. He established business networks that connected Filipino and overseas Chinese commercial circles and helped professionalize institutions within his group. Over time his conglomerate employed thousands and became an important participant in the national economy.

Public estimates placed his personal wealth at an estimated net worth of about $2.5 billion in September 2018. Ty died on 23 November 2018 in Manila, Philippines, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. His passing prompted reflections on his role in building one of the Philippines' most enduring private banking institutions and a diversified family-controlled conglomerate that continues to operate across multiple sectors.

Ty's legacy is often described in terms of institution-building and the transition of family-held enterprises into professionally managed corporations. While best known for Metrobank, his influence extended through investments and philanthropic activities that supported education, health and civic projects in communities where his companies operated.
