George Wald was an American biologist and educator whose laboratory work established the chemical basis of vision. He was born on November 18, 1906, in New York City and died on April 12, 1997 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Wald’s experiments clarified the role of light-sensitive pigments in the retina.
