Overview
Sir George Herbert Walter (8 September 1928 – 4 March 2008) was an Antiguan politician and public figure who led the Progressive Labour Movement and served as Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda from 14 February 1971 until 1 February 1976. He is remembered as one of the island's prominent leaders during the period before full independence. His life spanned much of the twentieth century political development of Antigua.
Early life and political beginnings
Born in Antigua in 1928, Walter entered public life at a time when Caribbean societies were negotiating colonial legacies and social change. He became involved in local political organizations and labour concerns that drove mid-century political reform across the region. Over time he emerged as a leading figure in the Progressive Labour Movement, a party that challenged established political forces and sought broader representation for workers and small farmers.
Time as Prime Minister and political impact
Walter's administration, which lasted from 1971 to 1976, governed during an era when Antigua remained a British associated territory and when economic and social modernization were major priorities. His government pursued policies intended to expand public services and manage economic development, while navigating the island's evolving relationship with the United Kingdom and neighbouring Caribbean states. His term reflected the contest between different political visions for Antigua's future and contributed to the island's political pluralism.
Later life and legacy
After leaving office, Walter continued to be regarded as an important voice in Antiguan public life. He died on 4 March 2008. Later that year, in recognition of his contributions to the nation, he was posthumously appointed a Knight of the Order of the National Hero (KNH), becoming Antigua and Barbuda's fifth National Hero. This honour acknowledged his role in national politics and his place in the country's modern history.
