First light (astronomy)
“First light” denotes a telescope’s inaugural observations and, separately, the cosmic epoch when the first stars lit the Universe, ending the Dark Ages.
Overview
In observational astronomy the phrase first light describes the first time a newly built or substantially upgraded telescope is used to image the sky. It marks the transition from construction and laboratory tests to on-sky operation. Engineers and astronomers typically perform daytime and engineering checks before that event, so the first-light exposures are usually the first time the instrument views the Universe as a coherent system.

The term also appears in cosmological contexts to describe the epoch when the first generation of stars and compact objects began to emit significant ultraviolet and visible light, an interval often termed the cosmic dawn. In physical cosmology this “first light” signals the end of the so-called Dark Ages and initiates processes—heating and reionization of the intergalactic medium—that shaped subsequent galaxy formation. Those earliest luminous sources are believed to have formed within the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang.

First light is important for several reasons. It provides a real-world test of design and construction, identifies problems that must be fixed before scientific operations begin, and offers an accessible image that helps communicate a project’s progress to scientists, funders and the public.
