David Cook was born on December 20, 1982 in Houston, Texas and grew up in Blue Springs, Missouri. His parents are Beth Foraker (née Frye) and Stanley Cook. He is the middle of three brothers - his older brother Adam Cook and younger brother Andrew Cook.

Already at the age of two he got a guitar. In the second grade he started singing in the school choir. At Blue Springs South High School, he performed in several musicals, including The Music Man, West Side Story and Singin' in the Rain.

He also enjoyed playing baseball there. After Cook stopped being interested in sports, he focused more on music. He received a theater scholarship to the University of Central Missouri; however, he changed majors after two semesters. In 2006, he graduated with a degree in graphic design. During his college years, he was a member of the fraternity Phi Sigma Kappa. After graduation, he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to further his music career. He told his mother "I'm going to give myself until I'm 26 years old before I find a job". After American Idol, Cook moved to Los Angeles, California. Since 2013 he resides in Nashville (Tennessee)

People reported on March 31, 2009, that Cook was canceling shows on his current tour due to family reasons. Cook's older brother, Adam, who had suffered from a brain tumor since 1998, died on May 2, 2009. On May 3, 2009, during his first participation in the Race for Hope in Washington, D.C., Cook announced his brother's death during a speech, saying that he could not imagine being anywhere else ("couldn't imagine being anywhere else right now."). His team raised $136,376.16 for research into a cure for brain tumors. During the season 8 finale of American Idol, Cook sang his song "Permanent" in honor of his brother. A recording of the performance was put on iTunes and the proceeds were also donated to brain tumor research. In May 2015, Cook will participate in the "Race for Hope" in Washington, D.C. for the seventh time. To date, Cook and his team have raised a total of more than $1 million to benefit brain tumor research. Cook celebrated reaching the $1 million mark with his fans at a special concert in Vienna, Virginia on December 2, 2014. Fans worldwide were able to attend via online stream.

His musical influences include Our Lady Peace, Alice in Chains, Big Wreck, Pearl Jam, Bon Jovi, Chris Cornell, The Goo Goo Dolls, Switchfoot, and Collective Soul. Immediately after winning American Idol, Cook was asked backstage by Entertainment Weekly who his top 5 bands were. The bands mentioned were Our Lady Peace, Big Wreck, Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World, and 8stops7.

Musical career

Cook was the frontman and guitarist for the band Axium from 1999 to 2006, which he formed with drummer Bobby Kerr while in high school. Axium's song Hold was selected by AMC Theatres Movie Tunes and played in over 20,000 movie theaters across the US before previews. In 2004, Axium was selected as the best band in Kansas City, Missouri and named one of the top 15 indie bands in the country in an independent band competition held by the "Got Milk?" advertising campaign. He released a total of four albums with Axium - Matter of Time, Blindsided, Alive in Tulsa and The Story Thus Far.

In 2006, Axium split up and Cook went to Tulsa, Oklahoma to join the band MidWest Kings. That same year, they recorded an EP called Incoherent with Desire to Move On.

In 2006, he released his first solo album called Analog Heart, which he wrote and designed the artwork for from 2004 to 2006. The website musicequalslife.com named Analog Heart the fourth best release of the year.

In 2007, Cook won Urban Tulsa Weekly's Absolute Best of Tulsa award for Best Locally Produced, Independent Album for his album. He recorded his second album before American Idol.

Over the weekend of April 18-20, 2008, Analog Heart was number one in the Today's Top MP3 Albums category on amazon.com, knocking Mariah Carey's album E=MC² from the top spot. A day later, however, Amazon removed the album from its website.
