Health, environment and distinctions
Untreated sewage can contain bacteria, viruses and parasites that cause diseases such as diarrhoea and hepatitis. Chemical contaminants may harm aquatic ecosystems, reduce oxygen levels, and accumulate in food chains. It is important to distinguish between sewage (domestic and sometimes industrial wastewater) and stormwater, which is runoff that may carry pollutants but generally has a different composition and treatment pathway.

Improving sanitation requires investment in sewers, decentralized systems, safer on-site options and policies for industrial discharge control.
