Punched card: physical data storage and control medium

A punched card is a stiff paper card in which patterns of holes encode data or control instructions. Widely used from the 19th century through mid-20th, it powered looms, census tabulation and early computers.

Overview

A punched card is a rectangular piece of stiff paper or cardboard in which the presence or absence of holes at defined positions represents information. The pattern of holes can be read mechanically or electrically by machines designed to sense them. Punched cards served as both data storage and instruction media for automated devices, allowing sequences of operations to be prepared, transported, and replayed without human intervention.

Structure and encoding

Cards were manufactured to standard sizes and divided into rows and columns. Each position could be either punched or intact, forming binary patterns. Different industries and manufacturers used various codes to map hole patterns to characters or commands; one influential approach was developed for tabulation machines where holes corresponded to numeric or categorical values. Physical features — card thickness, margin notches and printed guidelines — helped sorting and prevented feeding errors in high-speed equipment.

History and development

Early applications appeared in the textile industry, where punched media controlled pattern machines such as the Jacquard loom (Jacquard cards). In the late 19th century Herman Hollerith adapted the idea for statistical tabulation, building machines that read holes electrically and sped up national census work (Hollerith's system). Through the 20th century punched cards became central to data processing: they were used to prepare and supply input for tabulators, sorters, and later electronic computers.

Uses and examples

Punched cards controlled mechanical processes and recorded data in many contexts. Textile looms and automated organs used cards to encode patterns and melodies (loom control), while governments employed them for census and other large-scale data tasks (census applications). In computing, decks of cards represented programs and datasets; each card typically held one line of code or a record. Other non-computing uses included access tokens and tickets, such as hotel keys or parking stubs, where a punched pattern represented authorization (control and authorization).

Notable variations and legacy

Many formats existed: the widely recognized 80-column card became a de facto standard in computing, but different widths, hole arrangements and materials were used for particular machines. Punched cards required careful handling — bent, mispunched or misordered cards could cause errors — and desks of punched-card programs show how physical media shaped workflows and collaboration. Although largely superseded by magnetic and solid-state storage, punched cards remain in niche musical instruments, some voting systems, and as museum artifacts illustrating the transition from mechanical to electronic data processing.
