Azerbaijani Navy

History and development

The roots of the modern force reach back to 1918, when the short-lived Azerbaijan Democratic Republic formed the first national naval units following the collapse of the Russian Empire. During the Soviet period the region's maritime assets were integrated into the Soviet Navy. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Azerbaijan re-established its own navy using inherited facilities, personnel and vessels and subsequently developed an independent command and support structure.

Roles and responsibilities

The navy's primary tasks include maritime law enforcement, coastal defense, protection of oil and gas platforms and pipelines, search and rescue, anti-smuggling and mine countermeasure operations. Because the Caspian Sea is a closed basin, the force emphasizes fast patrol craft, coastal missile and gun platforms, and vessels suited to shallow-water operations rather than long-range blue-water ships.
