Over time manufacturing methods—such as button rifling and cold hammer forging—improved consistency, and modern treatments (lining, coatings) extended service life and resistance to wear.

Practical effects and care

Barrel length and rifling twist rate affect velocity, range and how quickly the projectile becomes stable in flight. Longer barrels can allow propellant gases to act on a projectile longer, often raising muzzle velocity, while shorter barrels reduce weight and improve maneuverability. Regular maintenance prevents erosion and loss of accuracy; headspace, alignment and wear are important safety considerations.

Different firearms place different demands on barrels: pistols emphasize compactness, rifles emphasize precision, and shotguns often rely on chokes rather than rifling to manage shot patterns.
