This article explains the Turkic language spoken in present-day Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, and adjacent areas; for the unrelated historical Azerbaijani (Āzari), see Old Azerbaijani language.

Azerbaijani language (proper name: Azərbaycan dili) or Azerbaijani Turkic (Azərbaycan türkcəsi), formerly officially also called Turkish (Türk dili) and therefore today often still unofficially referred to as such in everyday life, is the name for the official language of Azerbaijan, which as the closest relative of Turkish Turkic belongs to the Oghuz, i.e. the southwestern Turkic languages.

The national language of Azerbaijan is based on the dialect of Shirvan, and Azerbaijani (as a collective term for closely related languages and idioms) is the most important Turkic language in Iran, with about 14 million speakers, and is based there on the city dialect of Tabriz.

Doctrine

In the 1980s and 1990s, numerous publications and lexicons were produced by the German Azerbaijani scholars Nemat Rahmati (Azerbaijani Chrestomatie, Azerbaijani-German Dictionary, Tapmacalar) and Yusif Xalilov (German-Azerbaijani Dictionary).

In 2004, the German-Azerbaijani dictionary was created by Yazdani, a Berlin Turkologist. The Baku Germanist Amina Aliyeva published the first textbook of German for Azerbaijanis in the Azerbaijani language.

Nowadays, Azerbaijani is taught at the German universities in Bochum, Hamburg, Berlin and Frankfurt am Main. The University of Vienna also offered the Introduction to Azerbaijani (taught by Nasimi Aghayev) from 2001 to 2003.
