Characteristics and classification

Primates are a diverse order with traits such as grasping hands, forward-facing eyes, and flexible limbs. Important distinctions studied by primatologists include tail presence, dental patterns, social organization and cognitive capacities.

History and development

Interest in primates dates to early naturalists, but modern primatology expanded in the 20th century with systematic field studies and the development of comparative methods. Long-term research on communities, life histories and culture in primates has shaped ideas about social learning, tool use and the evolutionary roots of human behavior.

Methods and research settings

Methods include long-term behavioral observation, experimental psychology, anatomical and genetic analyses, endocrinology, and remote tracking. Work occurs in rainforests, savannas, captive facilities and museums, and often requires habituation of wild groups, ethical review and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Uses, conservation and ethics

Findings inform conservation strategies, captive management, public policy and our understanding of human evolution. Primatology addresses ethical issues such as habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict and welfare in research and zoos. Conservation and community engagement are central to many projects.

Further note: Primatology is inherently interdisciplinary and continually evolving as new techniques (for example, molecular genetics and remote sensing) are added to traditional observational study.
