Early life and family

Marshall was born Carole Penny Marshall in The Bronx, New York City, in October 1943. She came from a family involved in entertainment: her brother, Garry Marshall, also worked in television and film as a writer, producer and director. Marshall's background in a working-class New York neighborhood informed the comic sensibility she brought to acting and later to directing.

Acting and television

Marshall gained wide attention playing Laverne DeFazio on the sitcom Laverne & Shirley, which aired from 1976 to 1983.
