Pepe Oneto — Spanish political journalist and editor

Career and major roles

Oneto began his rise in national journalism in the 1970s. He joined the staff of the news magazine Cambio 16 in 1974 and became its director in 1976, at a moment when the Spanish press was expanding its role in public debate. In 1986 he moved to the Zeta publishing group and took charge of the magazine Tiempo, directing it until 1996. His professional trajectory bridged print and audiovisual media, and he later served as Director of Information at the private broadcaster Antena 3 Televisión between 1996 and 1998. He was also appointed twice to the board of the Madrid public broadcaster Telemadrid, first in 2000 and again in 2016.

Oneto was born in San Fernando, Cádiz. He died on 7 October 2019 at a hospital in San Sebastián. The reported cause was sepsis secondary to peritonitis. Colleagues and media commentators remember him for his leadership of major news titles and for his role during the Spanish Transition, when press institutions helped shape public understanding of democratic change.
