Overview
The pedal steel guitar is an electrically amplified steel-string instrument mounted on legs or a stand. Unlike fretted guitars, it is played horizontally with a metal bar, and its characteristic gliding pitches are produced by changing string tension while the strings vibrate and are sensed by magnetic pickups. The instrument commonly includes foot pedals and knee levers that alter the pitch of individual strings, allowing chromatic bending and complex chord shifts while notes sustain. Because of its distinctive smooth portamento and vocal-like bends the pedal steel is closely associated with country and western music.

A pedal steel typically has one or two necks, each equipped with multiple strings — ten is the most common number per neck, though some instruments use more. The necks are fretless but marked with reference lines where frets would appear, helping players aim the steel bar. Sound is produced by string vibration captured by magnetic pickups and routed to an amplifier; this amplification and the pickup design shape much of the instrument's tonal character. The mechanism of pedals and knee levers sits beneath the body and connects to a system of rods and changers that alter string tension and pitch.
Common features and variations
Designs vary: some instruments are single-neck, others double-neck to allow different tunings and chord palettes without retuning. Typical tunings include an E9 setup favored for modern country sounds and a C6 tuning used for jazzier, more complex voicings, though players choose many alternatives. Steel bars (also called slides) are moved along the string length to select pitch and produce the continuous slides so characteristic of the instrument. Players usually pluck with fingerpicks and a thumbpick and use volume pedals and muting techniques to shape sustain and attack.
Playing techniques and customization
Pedal steel technique combines right-hand picking patterns with left-hand steel bar control and coordinated pedal/knee action. Standard expressive devices include bending single strings or whole chords, harmonized pedal combinations, fast melodic runs, and bassline accompaniment. Many players customize which strings each pedal affects and the amount of pitch change; the resulting layout is known as a copedent, a personal prescription for pedal and lever assignments. This flexibility is a defining feature of the instrument, enabling both accompaniment roles and lead melodic work.
History and musical role
The pedal steel developed from earlier Hawaiian lap steels and console steels as builders and players sought ways to change pitch without retuning. Electrification and mechanical pitch changers were introduced in the early to mid‑20th century, and the instrument became prominent in country, western swing, and related American popular styles. Over time it also appeared in jazz, rock, and experimental music, where its sustained slides and bending chords add distinctive color and atmosphere.
Characteristics, distinctions and notation
Compared with a lap steel, which is stationary on the player's lap and lacks pedals, the pedal steel's movable changers and often multiple necks make it more mechanically complex and versatile. It is distinct from resonator instruments like the dobro in construction and tone production. Because frets are only guide marks, players rely on ear and sight for intonation and use specialized notation and tab systems that document copedents and pedal functions.
