Characteristics

Plumage varies from brown to gray with pale spotting or streaking. A notable feature is a pair of dark, rounded markings on the back of the neck that resemble eyes; these "false eyes" may deter predators approaching from behind. The bird has a long tail relative to its body and a direct, lively flight. Vocalizations are distinctive, often consisting of repeated clear hoots or toots used to defend territories and communicate with mates.

Diet and behavior center on ambush hunting from exposed perches. The North American populations feed on insects, small mammals and birds, taking prey with quick sallies. They nest in tree cavities, natural hollows, or abandoned woodpecker holes and do not build elaborate nests.

These owls inhabit mixed and coniferous forests, woodland edges, and montane zones. Their range extends through parts of Central America and across various regions of North America. The group has a complex taxonomic history: what was once treated as a single widespread species has been split into several closely related taxa by some authorities, reflecting regional differences in size, voice and plumage.
