It was once distributed across portions of central and eastern Africa but has been driven to functional extinction in the wild by habitat loss and heavy poaching. The northern white rhino was distinguished from the southern white rhino on the basis of geographic distribution and minor morphological and genetic differences. Its former range included grasslands, savannas and open woodlands of central and parts of eastern Africa, where individuals grazed on a variety of grasses and supplemented their diet with browse during dry periods. Like other white rhinos, it had a wide, square‑shaped upper lip adapted for grazing.
Appearance and behaviour
Adults were large, heavy mammals with thick skin folds and two horns on the snout. Behaviourally they showed social patterns typical of white rhinos: mostly solitary or occurring in loose groups, with territoriality by males around preferred grazing and water sites. Reproductive rates in the wild were relatively low, with long intervals between births compared with smaller mammals.
Causes of decline
During the 20th and early 21st centuries, the northern white rhino population collapsed under the combined effects of habitat conversion and intensive illegal hunting for horn. Poaching for international trade placed extreme pressure on remaining populations, and local conflicts and weak law enforcement prevented effective protection. By the early 21st century only a handful of animals remained alive under human care.
