Mule (horse–donkey hybrid)

A mule is the offspring of a female horse and a male donkey, valued for strength, sure-footedness and endurance; commonly used as a pack, draft and riding animal in difficult terrain.

A mule is the hybrid offspring of a female horse (mare) and a male donkey (jack). Combining traits from both parent species, mules often inherit the size and speed potential of the horse together with the hardiness, endurance and efficient metabolism of the donkey. Because of this combination they have been bred by humans for millennia for work that requires power, stamina and reliable behavior under difficult conditions. The reciprocal cross — a foal of a female donkey (jenny) and a male horse (stallion) — is called a hinny; hinnies are produced less often and may differ subtly in conformation and temperament.

Genetics and fertility

Horses and donkeys have different chromosome counts (commonly stated as 64 in horses and 62 in donkeys), so their hybrid offspring typically have an intermediate, odd number of chromosomes (commonly 63). This usually prevents normal pairing of chromosomes during gamete formation and renders most mules infertile. Fertile mules are extremely uncommon, with only rare documented cases worldwide; therefore, mules are generally not useful for establishing a breeding population.

Physical characteristics

Appearance varies substantially depending on the mare used in the cross: mules can range from small, pony-sized animals to large, draft-type individuals. Typical mule traits include a well-muscled body, long ears inherited from the donkey, and hooves that tend to be tough and often smaller than those of similarly sized horses. Many mules show hybrid vigor (heterosis), displaying strength, endurance and resistance to some illnesses that make them efficient working animals in marginal environments.

Mules form strong bonds with handlers and respond well to predictable routines.

Uses

Historically and today, mules have been used as pack animals, for pulling carts and plows, and for riding. They were particularly valued in agriculture, mining, logging, military supply and long-distance caravans because of their ability to carry heavy loads over rough ground while consuming relatively little forage. In modern times they remain useful where roads are absent or vehicles cannot easily operate — on steep trails, in remote construction or conservation projects, and for recreational pack trips. Mules are also exhibited in shows and compete in both western and English riding disciplines.

Care and management

Basic care for mules follows many practices used for horses and donkeys: regular hoof trimming, dental examinations, balanced nutrition appropriate to workload and age, and routine vaccination and parasite control as advised by a veterinarian. Hoof and dental care are particularly important for long-working pack animals. Because mules are efficient at converting forage into energy, careful attention to diet helps prevent obesity or metabolic problems. Proper conditioning and gradual introduction to load-bearing are important for long-term soundness.

History and cultural role

Mules have a long global history as working animals. They were widely used in pre-industrial societies when reliable draft power was essential for agriculture, transportation and military logistics. Regions with rugged terrain or poor pasture often preferred mules because of their sure-footedness, longevity and lower maintenance compared with some horses. Even following the spread of motorized transport, mules continued to play roles in specialized environments and remain culturally significant in many rural and mountain communities.
