Montes Taurus is a rugged highland mountain range on the Moon's near side, east of Mare Serenitatis. It includes peaks up to ~3 km, several craters, and the Taurus–Littrow valley visited by Apollo 17.

The Montes Taurus complex consists of irregular ridges and isolated peaks rather than a single continuous crest. Its rock and surface materials are typical of the lunar highlands — anorthositic crust battered and reworked by early large impacts. The contrast between the dark, basaltic Mare Serenitatis to the west and the lighter highlands of Montes Taurus to the east is one of the reasons the area is conspicuous in telescopic and orbital images. Elevations vary, with many summits rising a few kilometers above local low points; erosion on the Moon is impact-driven, so topography is the result of fragmenting collisions, ejecta deposition, and structural uplift.

Name and observational history

The name Montes Taurus was introduced by the 17th-century astronomer Johannes Hevelius, who followed a tradition of applying terrestrial names to lunar features; he intended a reference to the Taurus mountains of southern Anatolia (Taurus). Early telescopic observers and later cartographers refined the mapping of the region, and modern nomenclature by international bodies retains Hevelius's name. The term "Montes" indicates a group of peaks rather than a single mountain.

Significance and viewing

Scientifically, Montes Taurus is valuable as an exposed segment of ancient lunar crust that contrasts with nearby mare basalts, offering insight into early lunar processes and impact history. For amateur observers the range appears as a brighter, rugged area east of Mare Serenitatis; under favorable libration and illumination it can be resolved with medium to large backyard telescopes. Modern remote-sensing datasets continue to refine our understanding of its topography, composition, and the distribution of craters within the range, while archival Apollo samples from the nearby Taurus–Littrow valley provide ground truth for orbital measurements (crater and sample records).

Overall, Montes Taurus is a classic lunar highland province: topographically varied, heavily cratered, historically significant due to nearby Apollo exploration, and still of interest for comparative planetology and future studies of the Moon's early crustal evolution.
