Overview

Military mining, often called undermining or siege mining, is the deliberate excavation of tunnels beneath fortifications or terrain to damage, collapse, or secretly bypass enemy defenses. Historically it was a specialist task carried out by combat engineers and sappers to gain a tactical advantage during a protracted assault on a walled city, fortress or castle during a siege. The technique has been used since before the Middle Ages; accounts and archaeological evidence show tunnelling in ancient and early medieval warfare long before the high medieval period. Methods and working practices

Mining typically began from a protected shaft or trench well behind the front line. From this sunk shaft miners drove galleries toward the objective, often working on a slope or under cover to reduce detection. Galleries were shored with timber, provided with ventilation and drainage, and extended in stages. When miners reached the desired location they could create chambers to be packed with combustibles or explosive material. In earlier periods chambers were burned out to collapse them; with the advent of high explosives in the industrial era charges were used to produce large, instantaneous effects. Practical skills included silent digging, concealment of spoil, and the use of simple acoustic or mechanical listening devices to detect enemy counter-works.

Countermining and defensive measures

Defenders developed several countermeasures. Countermining involved digging interception galleries to meet an attacker’s tunnel, digging pits beneath a threatened wall, or listening through timber and earth for the sounds of digging and toolwork. Flooding, smoke, and surprise charges were also used to neutralise tunnels; defenders sometimes set off charges of their own to collapse invading galleries. Because underground work was cramped and noisy, detection and rapid reaction were crucial to prevent an undermining operation from succeeding.

Risks and hazards

Mining was hazardous for both attackers and defenders. Tunnel collapses, fires, asphyxiation from poor ventilation, underground combat, and accidental or premature detonations were frequent dangers. The psychological strain of prolonged subterranean operations was considerable: sappers worked in darkness, with the constant risk of sudden counterattack or burial. Even successful detonations could create complex tactical problems, producing craters and rubble that were difficult to exploit in an assault.

Decline and modern relevance

Traditional siege mining declined with changes in weapons, mobility and surveillance. Artillery, air reconnaissance and more powerful demolition charges reduced the practicality of long subterranean approaches against modern defences. Nevertheless, subterranean techniques persist in different forms: combat engineers use tunnels and covered approaches to protect movement, place demolition charges, or create protected supply routes.
