The county covers an area of about 2,006 square kilometres and lies at the northern foothills of the Qinling Mountains. The terrain transitions from low plains in the north to more rugged, forested hills to the south. According to the 2010 census the population was roughly 514,000, concentrated in market towns and village clusters linked to Xi'an by regional roads.
History and cultural significance
Lantian has a long-established reputation for its jade. Lantian jade (蓝田玉) has been collected and worked in the area for many centuries and appears in Chinese material culture and craft traditions. The county’s human settlement and craft activities are tied to both agricultural cycles and the exploitation of local mineral resources.
Economy and land use
Agriculture remains important: farms produce grains, vegetables and orchard crops typical of Shaanxi’s temperate zones. The local economy also includes small manufacturing, handicrafts centered on jade carving, and services catering to visitors. Tourism draws people interested in natural scenery, cultural history and jade-related crafts; together these sectors form the contemporary economic base alongside primary production and trade.
Sites, transport and administration
- Natural setting: proximity to the Qinling Mountains offers hiking and scenic routes.
- Cultural attractions: workshops, markets and small museums that explain the history of Lantian jade.
- Connectivity: road links to central Xi'an support commuting, tourism and agricultural trade.
Local government responsibilities include rural development, preservation of cultural resources and promotion of sustainable tourism and agriculture. Efforts to balance mineral extraction, craft traditions and environmental conservation shape contemporary policy and planning in the county (agriculture and tourism being named among the primary economic focuses).
