Lancashire [ˈlæŋkəʃər] is a county in north-west England. The name itself comes from Lancaster and shire. The county borders the Irish Sea as well as the counties of Cumbria, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside and the county-free areas of Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen.

Before the territorial reform of 1974, the county still bordered Cumberland, Westmorland, Yorkshire and Cheshire. The area was now reduced in size to simplify administration. From 1 April 1974, the Furness area (the former Lancashire area north of Morecambe Bay) became part of the newly divided county of Cumbria, south-eastern parts went to Greater Manchester, and south-western parts became Merseyside. The town of Warrington and its surrounding counties of Winwick, Croft, Risley and Culcheth were annexed to Cheshire. Part of the West Riding of Yorkshire near Clitheroe was annexed to Lancashire. In 1998 Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen became unitary authorities, but nominally remained within Lancashire for protocol and security purposes.

Lancashire is divided into several districts. These are Burnley, Chorley, Fylde, Hyndburn, Lancaster, Pendle, Preston, Ribble Valley, Rossendale, South Ribble, West Lancashire and Wyre.

The county's population was estimated at 1,449,300 in 2010.
