English Heritage
English Heritage ( ) is a registered charity that manages England's state-owned monuments and archaeological sites.
The organisation looks after over 400 historically valuable objects such as Stonehenge.
Membership opens up the opportunity to visit these properties for free or with reduced admission. Similar organisations exist in other parts of the UK, such as Historic Scotland in Scotland and Cadw in Wales.
From its foundation in 1983 until 2015, the organisation was also the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, acting as the Executive Non-departmental Public Body. From 1999 English Heritage had also been affiliated with the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, the institution charged with monuments inventories, and the National Monuments Record monuments archive. On 1 April 2015 these functions were split off and constituted as Historic England. Since then English Heritage has ceased to be a public authority and has become a registered charity, with the official title of English Heritage Trust.
