Meteorological history

Ernesto originated from a tropical wave in the tropical Atlantic and gradually organized into a tropical depression and then a tropical storm. Conditions in the central Caribbean allowed it to strengthen, and it attained hurricane intensity prior to crossing the Yucatán Peninsula. After interacting with land and encountering less favorable atmospheric conditions, the cyclone weakened and lost its organized structure before dissipating over south-central Mexico on August 10.
