Heptachlor is a highly persistent organochlorine insecticide formerly used against termites, ants and mosquitoes. It bioaccumulates, is toxic to liver and nervous system, and is listed under the Stockholm Convention.

Overview

Heptachlor is an organochlorine insecticide that was widely applied in agriculture and for structural pest control. It was used to control ants, termites and disease vectors such as Anopheles mosquitoes (members of the genus Anopheles), which can transmit malaria. Beyond targeted vector control it served as a broad-purpose pesticide in the mid-20th century.

Chemistry and manufacture

Heptachlor belongs to the cyclodiene class of chlorinated hydrocarbons. Industrial synthesis historically relied on a Diels–Alder type reaction between chlorinated dienes and cyclopentadiene derivatives to produce the characteristic bicyclic structure. The commercial product was available in several formulations, including a powdered form sold as dusts and granules (powder), emulsions and sprays.

Environmental fate and metabolites

Heptachlor is chemically stable and resists degradation, allowing residues to persist in soil, sediment and fatty tissues for many years. It tends to remain in the environment and to bioaccumulate and biomagnify in food chains. A notable and often more persistent breakdown product is heptachlor epoxide, which is monitored as an indicator of contamination.

Health effects and exposure

Human exposure occurred historically through occupational contact, contaminated food, or environmental residues. Heptachlor affects the liver and the central nervous system, producing acute neurotoxic effects at high doses and chronic adverse effects at lower, repeated exposures. It has been associated with immune and endocrine effects, and is considered to may contribute to cancer risk in humans; assessments by health authorities describe a possible carcinogenic hazard.

Regulation, uses and alternatives
