Andrewsarchus is an extinct mammal best known from a large skull discovered in central Asia. The genus name honors the explorer Roy Chapman Andrews, and its specific name refers to its Mongolian provenance; the second element of the name derives from Greek ἀρχός, meaning "ruler". It lived during the Eocene epoch and is usually placed among the mesonychids, a group of hoofed, carnivorous mammals.

The type material of Andrewsarchus is fragmentary: a large skull and a few associated bones recovered in the early 20th century during expeditions to the Gobi Desert. Because so little of the skeleton is known, many reconstructions rely on comparisons with related taxa. The discovery attracted attention because the skull was unusually large and robust for an Eocene mammal, prompting early portrayals of Andrewsarchus as one of the largest terrestrial mammalian carnivores.
Physical characteristics
The skull shows a long, deep snout with powerful jaw musculature and large, shearing and crushing teeth. These dental features suggest a diet that could include flesh and bone. General characteristics attributed to Andrewsarchus, inferred from mesonychid relatives, include:

Andrewsarchus occupies a prominent place in popular and scientific discussions of ancient mammalian predators because of its size and evocative skull. It also figures in older debates about the relationships between mesonychids and early whales; later molecular and fossil work revised those hypotheses, linking whales more closely to artiodactyls, but mesonychids remain important for understanding early ungulate and carnivore evolution. Many questions about Andrewsarchus — its full body proportions, locomotion, and precise ecological role — can only be resolved with new, more complete fossils.
