Goniatites are extinct ammonoid cephalopods that lived from the Middle Devonian to the end of the Permian. Known for their chambered external shells and simple goniatitic sutures, they are important fossils.
Overview
Goniatites are an extinct group of shelled cephalopods placed in the Order Goniatitida. They belong to the larger lineage of ammonoids, a diverse clade of externally shelled cephalopods related to modern squids and octopuses and more distantly to the living Nautilus. Goniatitids first appear in the fossil record in the Middle Devonian (roughly 390 million years ago) and persisted until the close of the Permian, where many lineages disappeared during the end‑Permian biotic crisis. Like other ammonoids, goniatites possessed an external, planispiral shell divided by internal septa into a series of gas‑filled chambers (camerae) that provided buoyancy. The living animal occupied the outermost chamber (the body chamber) and propelled itself by jetting water. A tube-like structure called the siphuncle traversed the septa and helped adjust the gas and liquid content of chambers for buoyancy control; in many goniatitids the siphuncle is located toward the shell's ventral margin. The head bore multiple arms or tentacles and well-developed eyes; soft‑part details are rarely preserved and are inferred by comparison with other cephalopods and exceptional fossils. Diagnostic features
- Suture pattern: Goniatites are defined by relatively simple, angular sutures with undivided lobes and saddles—often called goniatitic sutures—which distinguish them from the later, more complex ceratitic and ammonitic suture patterns.
- Shell form: Most have tightly coiled, planispiral shells, though ornamentation (such as ribs or nodes) and shell profile vary among genera.

Goniatitida evolved from earlier ammonoid ancestors in the Middle Devonian and radiated into numerous families and genera through the Carboniferous and Permian. They are especially abundant in sediments deposited in shallow inland seas of the late Paleozoic tropics and subtropics, and can be common fossils in many limestones and shales of that time. Field guides and regional studies often note goniatites among the characteristic fossils of limestone and shale sequences derived from ancient inland seas, particularly in tropical to subtropical paleolatitudes (tropics and subtropics).
Ecology, uses, and significance
Goniatites were likely active, free‑swimming predators or opportunistic feeders within marine food webs. Their abundance and relatively rapid evolutionary changes make them valuable index fossils for correlating and dating marine Paleozoic strata; paleontologists use goniatitid assemblages to subdivide intervals of the Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian. Fossil shells are also collected for study and display, and some well‑preserved specimens are prepared or polished for educational and decorative purposes.
Distinguishing goniatites from related groups
- Compared with nautiloids, goniatites have more complex septal sutures and typically a different siphuncle position and shell ornamentation.
