George Sanders

Early life and formation

Sanders was born to English parents in Saint Petersburg in the Russian Empire and spent his childhood in England after the family returned home. He was raised in Brighton and attended Brighton College before further technical studies in Manchester. Early work included stage appearances and small film roles in Britain; by the 1930s he had established himself enough to begin regular film work and to attract attention in international productions.

Career and major roles

Sanders built a reputation for playing urbane sophisticates, cynical sophisticates and charming villains. Among the films most commonly associated with him are Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca, in which he appeared in a supporting role, and All About Eve, for which he received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Later in his career he provided the voice of the tiger Shere Khan in Disney's The Jungle Book, demonstrating how his cultured vocal delivery could be used to create memorable animated antagonists. He also appeared on television, notably portraying the villainous Mr. Freeze in the 1960s Batman series, which introduced his persona to a new generation of viewers.

Personal life

Sanders's private life received considerable attention. Over the years he married several times and formed a number of public relationships. His marriages included unions with Susan Larson, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Benita Hume, and later with Magda Gabor; in the late 1960s he had a long partnership with Lorraine Chanel. He had no children. His elder brother, Tom Conway, was also an actor and the two sometimes moved in similar casting directions in film and radio.

Death and legacy

In April 1972 Sanders died by suicide in Spain. He had long been associated with a mordant, ironic public image, and after his death his ashes were distributed in the English Channel. Critics and historians continue to note his skill at combining suavity and menace, qualities that made him an archetypal screen demi‑villain. His work remains studied for its vocal control, comic timing and the way he helped define a type of sophisticated antagonist in mid‑century cinema.
