Geography and layout

Located on the Mediterranean shore, Castelldefels is characterised by a long sandy beach backed by a promenade and low dunes. Inland the town extends up gentle hills crowned by a medieval castle. Its urban fabric includes a historic centre, newer residential neighbourhoods and zones of leisure and sport along the seafront. The municipality is well connected to Barcelona by road and rail, and lies close to Barcelona–El Prat airport, making it an accessible coastal suburb.

History and development

The area shows evidence of ancient occupation and developed around a fortified castle that gave the town its name. Over centuries the site evolved from a rural settlement into a seaside resort and commuter town, especially from the late 19th century onward as tourism and improved transport links encouraged growth. In the late 20th century urban expansion integrated Castelldefels more closely into Barcelona’s metropolitan network.

Economy, culture and recreation

Tourism plays a significant seasonal role, with the beach attracting visitors for sunbathing, swimming and watersports. The Canal Olímpic de Catalunya, built as a competition and training venue for Olympic rowing and canoeing, is a notable sports facility. Castelldefels also functions as a residential community for people working in Barcelona, and supports local commerce, restaurants offering Mediterranean cuisine, and annual cultural festivals.

Notable facts

The town is known for its castle overlooking the sea, its extensive beach and for sporting facilities that draw regional events. Castelldefels was the scene of a tragic train accident in 2010 that prompted safety reviews of rail crossings; since then, transport infrastructure and safety measures have been progressively updated. Green spaces, promenades and easy access to Barcelona contribute to its appeal for both residents and visitors.
