Mar Dinkha IV (born Dinkha Khanania; 15 September 1935 – 26 March 2015) was the Catholicos-Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East. Elected in 1976, he guided a church with ancient roots in Mesopotamia through decades of political upheaval and migration, leading its central administration from Chicago, Illinois, in the United States.

Life and early ministry

He was born into an Assyrian family in Darbandokeh and received traditional ecclesiastical training before serving as a priest in the Middle East, including ministry in Tehran. His background combined local parish work with responsibilities that prepared him for leadership of a widely dispersed community.

Role as Patriarch

As Catholicos-Patriarch he was the chief bishop and symbolic head of the Assyrian Church of the East. His duties included overseeing bishops, protecting liturgical traditions, supporting clergy education, and tending to the pastoral needs of congregations scattered across the Middle East, Europe, Australia and North America. Under his tenure the patriarchal seat came to be based in Chicago, where many Assyrian diaspora institutions are located.

Ecumenical work and significance

Mar Dinkha IV was active in ecumenical conversations and interchurch relations, representing the Assyrian Church in dialogues with other Christian communions. He worked to raise awareness of the historical identity of the Church of the East, to promote pastoral care for displaced populations, and to sustain liturgical and linguistic heritage among successive generations.

Death and legacy

He died on 26 March 2015 in Rochester, Minnesota. His nearly forty-year patriarchate is remembered for steady leadership during times of migration and conflict, for engagement in wider Christian dialogue, and for efforts to preserve the traditions and community life of the Assyrian Church of the East in the modern diaspora.
