Dilong paradoxus is a small, feathered tyrannosauroid from the Lower Cretaceous of Liaoning, China. Its fossils show protofeathers and have shaped ideas about the evolution of feathers in tyrannosauroids.

Overview

Dilong paradoxus is the only named species of the genus Dilong, a small carnivorous dinosaur known from Early (Lower) Cretaceous deposits in northeastern China. Remains come from the Lujiatun beds near Beipiao in western Liaoning province, and the animal lived roughly during the early part of the Cretaceous period. Its discovery provided one of the earliest direct links between tyrannosauroid dinosaurs and filamentous integumentary structures.

Anatomy and integument

Dilong was much smaller than the later, giant tyrannosaurids: body proportions and preserved material indicate a lightly built predator with a skull bearing sharp teeth and relatively short forelimbs. Most remarkably, impressions of simple, filamentous feathers were preserved near the jaw and tail regions of specimens. These filaments differ from modern bird feathers by lacking a well-developed central shaft, and they are generally interpreted as protofeathers—simple, hairlike structures likely used for insulation and perhaps visual display rather than for flight.

Discovery and classification

First described in the scientific literature in the early 21st century, Dilong became important because it placed a feathered form within the broader tyrannosauroid lineage. It is considered a basal or early-branching member of that group, more primitive than the later large-bodied tyrannosaurids. This position helped paleontologists infer the ancestral conditions for the clade, including the possibility that filamentous integument preceded the evolution of scaly skin in some descendants.

Significance for feather evolution

The presence of protofeathers in Dilong supports a wider pattern of feather-like coverings among many theropod dinosaurs. At the same time, skin impressions from several large, later tyrannosaurid specimens show pebbly scales rather than feathers — a contrast that has prompted discussion about evolutionary change or ontogenetic shifts (feathered juveniles versus largely scaly adults). Skin impressions from adult tyrannosaur specimens discovered in regions such as Alberta and Mongolia provide key comparisons when reconstructing how integument varied across size, age, and species.
